About the University of Bolton
The University of Bolton, also known as UoB, is a public university in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. Often referred to as a ‘post-92’ institution due to the Further and Higher Education Act 1992, it serves around 11,000 students and employs over 900 academic and professional staff. The university is a member of Universities UK, Million+, and the All-Party Parliamentary University Group. Founded in 1824 as the Bolton Mechanics’ Institute, the university evolved through various educational phases. In 1887, it established a Technical School to support the town’s industrial growth. By 1926, it had become Bolton Technical School, later transitioning to Bolton Technical College in 1964. The institution gained degree-awarding powers in 1990 and achieved university status in 2004.
